(Review by Sean Conover)
What do you expect in a zombie movie?
If you think this film is anything more than a hodge-podge group of people being chased by mostly-dead cannibalistic humans, you'd be wrong. Sure, there is some rather humorous updated dialogue, but it still comes down to the original plot laid out by George Romero in "Night of the Living Dead" in 1968: the walking-dead try to get at a group of people who hole-up somewhere and try to survive.
In this remake of the sequel, when some sort of virus breaks-out all over town, and apparently the world, at the same time, the dead apply really bad make-up, start shuffling around and biting the living, turning everyone into zombies. Well, except the few that can escape and hide out in a mall. The hodge-podge group that does manage to find each other includes a police officer (Ving Rhames), a Nurse (Sarah Polley), the white guy, the black guy, the gay guy...you get the idea, all meet up in the local mall which, thankfully, happens to be totally empty and 100% secure!
After spending many days digesting the coffee shop's seemingly endless supply of drinks and food, the group decides that they need to eventually leave the mall, head for a boat, and sail off to an island.
And, that's about it. Throw in a few thousand zombies, and some fun scenes of the group shooting, spearing, and chopping off some zombie heads, and you've got yourself a delightfully gory (and at times very funny) zombie flick. Expect anything more, and you'll be deadfully disappointed. |
